Beer Brewing Equipment | ||||||||||||
As with many hobbies, equipment varies in quality and price. How serious you are about brewing your own beer will influence how much money you will wish to spend and how specialised you need your equipment to be.Your local homebrew store will advise you if you are a beginner, but below is the basic equipment that you'll need to brew your own beer! Brewpot: Preferably stainless steel, able to hold 3 gallons or more. Fermentor: 25 litre thick plastic pail will do the trick. Airlock & Stopper: To allow gases to escape during the fermenting process. Usually filled with water to prevent oxygen and accompanying bacteria from entering the brew. Hydrometer: Must be able to withstand high temperatures of up to 180F. Floating hydrometers are generally best for this purpose as they can remain in the brew throughout, ensuring a more accurate reading. Beer bottles, Caps & Capper: Glass or plastic bottles will do! Caps can be bought from suppliers along with the capping tool, although the Grolsch style bottle will do perfectly. Whichever bottle you settle upon, make certain that they are cleaned thoroughly. Bacteria has runied many a fine beer during the bottling process! Long Plastic Spoon: Stirring is essential throughout the brewing process. The longer the spoon the better!
